In 2022, I plan to begin offering geology and rock hounding tours of the San Rafael Swell in Emery County, Utah.  Join the mailing list to be notified of updates on the tours or contact me if you have any questions.

Proposed tours include:

Cretaceous Lower Mancos Shale near Lawrence (4-5 hours)

·        Geology of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway and changes in depositional environment

·        Ammonites, clams, snails, trace fossils, calcite concretions

Jurassic Formations, geologic evolution of the Wedge, prehistorical cultures of the petroglyphs and pictographs. (7-8 hours)

·        Jurassic geology from the Navajo, Carmel, Entrada, Curtis, Summerville and Morrison Formations.

·        Changes in environments from desert and marine, repeatedly through the Jurassic.

·        Weathering and landscape formation

·        History of dinosaur paleontology.  We will also discuss the petroglyphs and pictographs of the area, the differences in the early cultures, and the importance of preserving these sites.

·        Visit to the Wedge Overlook

·        Visit to Buckhorn Wash Pictographs and nearby Petroglyphs

·        Selenite, Star crinoids (pentacrinus), clams

Triassic and Jurassic of Dutch Flat Road and the Little Wedge Plateau (8 hours)

·        Weathering and landscape formation

·        Visit to Fuller Bottom on the San Rafael River

·        Discussion of Jurassic Geology

·        Discussion of the role the BLM plays in resource management

Jurassic and Cretaceous of Sand Bench Loop (6-8 hours)

·        Geology of the Jurassic and Cretaceous

·        Soil nodules that are often mistaken for coprolite (dinosaur poop)

·        agate, jasper, barite nodules.  Collecting will be limited to 5 specimens per person.

Tour of the Triassic geology of Mexican Mountain Road (5-6 hours)

Jurassic of the Greasewood Draw Area (4-5 hours)

·        Jurassic Geology

·        Weathering and landscape formation of the Reef of the San Rafael Swell

·        History of uranium mining

·        Jasper geodes with calcite and celestite.

Jurassic of Moore Cutoff (4-5 hours)

·        Jurassic geology

·        Jasper, agate, petrified wood.
